1．Dialogues  对话

A:  Do you have any luggage to be checked in?

你要托运行李吗？

B:  Yes, I have three pieces of check-in luggage. 

是的，我有三件托运行李。

A:  You can only check in two pieces of luggage free of charge, with a total weight of 40 kilos, twenty a piece. Please put them on the scale one by one to weigh in. You have to pay for the third one by weight.

你只可以免费托运两件行李，总重量不超过40公斤，每件不超过20公斤。请一件一件放在磅称上。第三件要按重量付费。

B:  Okay. This one is quite heavy, my shoes and clothes, some tin food, a laptop.

好的。 这一件蛮重的，我的鞋子，衣服，还有些罐头食品，一台手提电脑。

A:  Sorry，Madam. Food would not be allowed to be taken into Australia without the certificate issued by the quarantine authorities. 

对不起，太太。 没有检疫机构出具的证书，食品是不被允许带入澳大利亚的。

A:  The two suitcases are subject to the charge for excess weight.   

这两个箱子超重也要付费。

B:  I beg your pardon. Do you mean my suitcases are over the permitted weight limit and I need to pay an extra fee?

3  Tips and Notes  要点解释

• Baggage 与Luggage意为行李，是一对同义词，均为不可数名词。在实际应用中，它们又不能完全通用。在口语中，Baggage 和Luggage 可互用；Luggage 的使用频率远高于Baggage。但世界上各国际机场大多用Babbage Claim 而不用 Luggage Claim.
• Tin food 也可以说Tinned food. 我们日常生活中常说的一听罐头的“听”就是这么来的。Tin是金属锡的英语单词，因在早期的制罐铁皮上涂了一层“tin” (锡)而得此名。美国人讲罐头用“can”; 罐头食品用“canned food”.
• “Laptop” 在中文里翻译成“手提电脑”。而英语中的lap” 是“大腿”的意思。“top”是“在上面”的意思。早期的电脑因又大又笨重只能放在地板上。后来有了放在桌面但仍不便提了就走的电脑（“tabletop”）。再后来有了便于手提携带，放在“lap”上也能使用的“laptop”（手提电脑）。
• “I beg your pardon” 是请你原谅的意思，也有因没听清或没听懂对方的讲话时请对方重复一遍所说的话的意思。说此话时一定要注意语气。如果讲话人把句子重音放在“pardon” 上，就有与人不客气的意思了。
• “either…or…” 这一词组一般引出两个选择或可能。如: He is either mad or drunk.
