    The Unbearable Lightness of Being《不能承受的生命之轻》是作者米兰·昆德拉颇负盛名的作品。原著为捷克语,本版本由美国著名翻译家Michael Henry Heim翻译。小说描写了托马斯与特丽莎、萨丽娜之间的感情生活。但它不是一个男人和两个女人的三角性爱故事,它是一部哲理小说,小说从“永恒轮回”的讨论开始,把读者带入了对一系列问题的思考中,比如轻与重、灵与肉。本书适合对心理学、哲学以及英语文学感兴趣的书迷朋友阅读。
    推荐理由:

    2.捷克裔法国作家米兰·昆德拉的代表作,以反讽手法,及幽默的语调描绘人类境况;
    3.英文译本用词准确,表达地道,表达风格与原版接近;
    4.作品表面轻松,实质沉重;表面随意,实质精致;表面通俗,实质深邃而又机智,充满了人生智慧。

    The Unbearable Lightness of Beingis a philosophical novel by Milan Kundera about two women, two men, a dog and their lives in the 1968 Prague Spring period of Czechoslovak history. It explores the artistic and intellectual life of Czech society from the Prague Spring of 1968 to the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union and three other Warsaw Pact countries and its aftermath.
    “Brilliant… A work of high modernist playfulness and deep pathos.”
                                         —Janet Malcolm,New York Review of Books
    “Kundera has raised the novel of ideas to a new level of dreamlike lyricism and emotional intensity.”
                                                    —Jim Miller,Newsweek
    “Kundera is a virtuoso… A work of the boldest mastery, originality, and richness.”
                                                 —Elizabeth Hardwick,Vanity Fair

    米兰·昆德拉编著的《不能承受的生命之轻》是一部长篇小说。沉重的负担压迫着我们,让我屈服于它,把我们压到地上,但在历代的爱情诗中,女人总渴望承受一个男性身体的重量。于是,沉重的负担同时也成了强盛的生命力的影像。负担越重,我们的生命越贴近大地,它就越真切实在。
    相反,当负担完全缺失,人就会变得比空气还轻,就会飘起来,就会远离大地和地上的生命,人也就只是一个半真的存在,其运动也会变得自由而没有意义。
    那么,到底选择什么?是重还是轻?

    The Unbearable Lightness of Beingtakes place mainly in Prague in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A young woman in love with a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing; one of his mistresses and her humbly faithful lover-these are the two couples whose story is told in this masterful novel. Kundera’s first sinceThe Book of Laughter and Forgetting. In a world in which lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and by fortuitous events, a world in which everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence, we feel the unbearable lightness of being not only as the consequence of our private actions, but also in the public sphere, and the two inevitably intertwine.

    Milan Kundera (born 1 April 1929) is a Czech-born writer who went into exile in France in 1975, and became a naturalised French citizen in 1981. He “sees himself as a French writer and insists his work should be studied as French literature and classified as such in book stores”.
    Kundera’s best-known work is The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Prior to the Velvet Revolution of 1989 the Communist régime in Czechoslovakia banned his books. He lives virtually incognito and rarely speaks to the media. A perennial contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature, he is believed to have been nominated on several occasions.

    The idea of eternal return is a mysterious one, and Nietzsche has often perplexed other philosophers with it: to think that everything recurs as we once experienced it, and that the recurrence itself recurs ad infinitum! What does this mad myth signify?
    Putting it negatively, the myth of eternal return states that a life which disappears once and for all, which does not return, is like a shadow, without weight, dead in advance, and whether it was horrible, beautiful, or sublime, its horror, sublimity, and beauty mean nothing. We need take no more note of it than of a war between two African kingdoms in the fourteenth century, a war that altered nothing in the destiny of the world, even if a hundred thousand blacks perished in excruciating torment.
    Will the war between two African kingdoms in the fourteenth century itself be altered if it recurs again and again, in eternal return?
    It will: it will become a solid mass, permanently protuberant, its inanity irreparable.
