伊索，由于年代久远，传下来的史料很少，我们只知道伊索在公元前6世纪出生在希腊。他小时候笨嘴拙舌，长得又矮又丑，只有母亲不嫌弃他，时常讲故事给他听。到十多岁时，伊索终于变得口齿清楚。
母亲去世后，伊索跟随外公去希腊诸岛漫游。他在游历中学到了许多动物的知识。外公死后，伊索被他寄食的牧羊人卖给萨摩斯岛上一个贵族雅德蒙家做奴隶。
为奴的伊索因为聪明过人，大家都喜欢听他讲故事。后来主人雅德蒙签署了“奴隶释放”，伊索得以解除奴籍，变成自由人。
此后伊索到处游历，讲述寓言故事，一度还受到吕府亚邦国王克洛索斯的器重，后者特命伊索为特使，出使德尔斐，教化那里的百姓，受到德尔斐民众的敬爱。这遭到了德尔斐祭司的忌恨。在一次祭祀大礼中，祭司借口神灵附体，说伊索偷窃了庙里用来祭祀的金器，犯了亵渎神灵的罪过，将他判处死刑，并立刻执行，他被推下山崖而死。一代寓言大师就这样走完了他的一生。
