Newbery Honor BookDragonwings by Lawrence Yep takes readers on an adventure-filled journey across the world.
Inspired by the story of a Chinese immigrant who created a flying machine in 1909,Dragonwings touches on the struggles and dreams of Chinese immigrants navigating opportunity and prejudice in San Francisco.
Moon Shadow only knows two things about his father, Windrider: he lives in San Francisco and used to craft beautiful kites.
One day shortly after his eighth birthday, Cousin Hand Clap arrives with a letter from Windrider asking Moon Shadow to join him in San Francisco. When Moon Rider arrives in America he learns that his father makes a living doing laundry and dreams of building a flying machine just like the Wright Brothers. But making this fantastical dream a reality proves to be no easy task, as intolerance, poverty, and even an earthquake stand in their way.
Review
“A fine, sensitive novel written with grace in a way that conveys the Chinese American's cultural heritage”. — ALA Booklist
“A Chinese immigrant and his son build a flying machine in an unusual historical novel, unique in its perspective of the Chinese in America and its portrayal of early 20th-century San Francisco, including the Earthquake, from an immigrant's viewpoint.” — School Library Journal

“A triumph.” — The New York Times

Mother usually said she wastoo busy to answer my questions. It was a fact that she was overworked, for Grandmother was too old to help her with the heavy work, and she had to try to do both her own work and Fathers on our small firm. The rice had to be grown from seeds, and the seedlings transplanted to the paddies, and thepaddies tended and harvested. Besides this, she always had to keep one eye on our veryactivepig to keep him from rooting in our smallvegetable
patch. She also had to watch our three’ chickens, who loved to wander away from ourfarm.
Any time I brought up the’ subject o1 the Golden Mountain. Mother suddenlyfound something going wrong on our farm. Maybe some seedlings had not been planted into their underwater beds properly, or perhaps our pig was citing the wrong kind of garbage, or maybe one of’ our chickens wasdirtying our doorway. She always had some goodexcuse for not talking about the Golden Mountain. I knew she was afraidof the place. Because every chancewe got, she would take me into the small temple in our villageand we would pray for Father’s safety, though she would never tell me what she was afraid of. It was a small satisfaction to her that our prayers had worked so far. Motherwas never stingy about burning incense for Father.
I was curious about the Land of the Golden Mountain mainly because my father was there. I had, of course, never seen my father. And we could not go to live with him for two reasons…
