Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the shivering flames in Lupin’s hand, was a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling. Its face was completely hidden beneath its hood. Harry’s eyes darted downwards, and what he saw made his stomach contract. There was a hand protruding from the cloak and it was glistening, greyish, slimy-looking and scabbed, like something dead that had decayed in water … 

It was visible only for a split second. As though the creature beneath the cloak sensed Harry’s gaze, the hand was suddenly withdrawn into the folds of the black material. 

And then the thing beneath the hood, whatever it was, drew a long, slow, rattling breath, as though it was trying to suck something more than air from its surroundings. 

An intense cold swept over them all. Harry felt his own breath catch in his chest. The cold went deeper than his skin. It was inside his chest, it was inside his very heart … 

Harry’s eyes rolled up into his head. He couldn’t see. He was drowning in cold. There was a rushing in his ears as though of water. He was being dragged downwards, the roaring growing louder … 

And then, from far away, he heard screaming, terrible, terrified, pleading screams. He wanted to help whoever it was, he tried to move his arms, but couldn’t … a thick white fog was  wirling around him, inside him – 

‘Harry! Harry! Are you all right?’ 

Someone was slapping his face. 

‘W-what?’ 

Harry opened his eyes. There were lanterns above him, and the floor was shaking – the Hogwarts Express was moving again and the lights had come back on. He seemed to have slid out of his seat onto the floor. Ron and Hermione were kneeling next to him, and above them he could see Neville and Professor Lupin watching. Harry felt very sick; when he put up his hand to push his glasses back on, he felt cold sweat on his face. 

Ron and Hermione heaved him back onto his seat. 

‘Are you OK?’ Ron asked nervously. 

‘Yeah,’ said Harry, looking quickly towards the door. The hooded creature had vanished. What happened? Where’s that – that thing? Who screamed?’ 

‘No one screamed,’ said Ron, more nervously still. 

Harry looked around the bright compartment. Ginny and Neville looked back at him, both very pale. 

‘But I heard screaming –’ 

A loud snap made them all jump. Professor Lupin was breaking an eDrmous slab of chocolate into pieces. 

‘Here,’ he said to Harry, handing him a particularly large piece. ‘Eat it. It’ll help.’ 

Harry took the chocolate but didn’t eat it. 

‘What was that thing?’ he asked Lupin. 

‘A Dementor,’ said Lupin, who was Dw giving chocolate to everyone else. ‘One of the Dementors of Azkaban.’ 

Everyone stared at him. Professor Lupin crumpled up the empty chocolate wrapper and put it in his pocket. 

‘Eat,’ he repeated. ‘It’ll help. I need to speak to the driver, excuse me …’ 

He strolled past Harry and disappeared into the corridor. 

‘Are you sure you’re OK, Harry?’ said Hermione, watching Harry anxiously. 

‘I don’t get it … what happened?’ said Harry, wiping more sweat off his face. 

‘Well – that thing – the Dementor – stood there and looked around (I mean, I think it did, I couldn’t see its face) – and you – you –’ 

‘I thought you were having a fit or something,’ said Ron, who still looked scared. ‘You went sort of rigid and fell out of your seat and started twitching –’ 

‘And Professor Lupin stepped over you, and walked towards the Dementor, and pulled out his wand,’ said Hermione. ‘And he said, “None of us is hiding Sirius Black under our cloaks. Go.” But the Dementor didn’t move, so Lupin muttered something, and a silvery thing shot out of his wand at it, and it turned round and sort of glided away …’ 

在卢平手里的颤巍巍的火苗映照下，可以看见门口站着一个穿斗篷的身影，又高又大，差点儿碰着天花板。他的脸WQ藏在兜帽下。哈利的目光往下一扫，看见的东西使他的胃揪成了一团。斗篷下伸出一只手，灰白色的，阴森森的闪着光，似乎布满了黏液和斑点，J像某种死了以后在水里腐烂的东西……

那只手随即J不见了。穿斗篷的家伙似乎意识到了哈利的目光，突然把手缩进了黑色斗篷的褶缝里。

接着，穿斗篷的家伙——不管是什么东西——慢慢地吸了一口长气，喉咙里发出咯咯的声音，似乎它吸进去的不只是周围的空气。

一股刺骨的寒意席卷了他们。哈利觉得喘不过气来。那寒意渗进他的皮肤，侵入他的胸膛，进入他的心脏……

哈利的眼睛往上一翻，什么也看不见了。他被寒意淹没，耳朵里呼呼作响，像在水里一样。什么东西在把他往下拽，呼呼声越来越响……

这时，他听见从很远的地方传来尖叫声，可怕的、惊惶的、哀求的尖叫声。他想去帮帮那个人，他想挪动一下胳膊，可是怎么也动不了……一团浓浓的白雾在他周围旋转，在他内心旋转——

“哈利！哈利！你没事吧？”

有人在拍打他的脸。

“什……什么？”

哈利睁开眼睛。头1；CY=CY上灯光闪亮，地板在颤动——霍格沃茨特快列车又开动了，灯也重新亮了起来。他似乎从座位滑到了地板上。罗恩和赫敏跪在他身边，他看见纳威和卢平教授站在他们身后，都注视着他。哈利觉得FC难受，他抬起手把眼镜推上鼻梁时，摸到脸上满是冷汗。

罗恩和赫敏把他扶回座位上。

“你没事吧？”罗恩紧张地问。

“没事。”哈利说着，迅速朝门口望去。穿斗篷的家伙已经不见了。“出什么事了？那个……那个东西到哪儿去了？谁在尖叫？”

“没有人尖叫啊。”罗恩说，显得更紧张了。

哈利在明亮的包厢里四下望了望。金妮和纳威朝他看着，两人脸色都很苍白。

“可是我听见了尖叫声——”

咔吧一声，把他们都吓了一跳。卢平教授把一大块巧克力掰成了好几片。

“给，”他把特别大的一片递给哈利，对他说道，“吃吧，会有帮助的。”

哈利接过巧克力，但没有吃。

“那东西是什么？”他问卢平。

“摄魂怪，”卢平一边把巧克力分给每个人，一边回答，“阿兹卡班的摄魂怪。”

大家都吃惊地瞪着他。卢平教授把空了的巧克力包装纸揉成一团，塞进了口袋。

“吃吧，”他又说道，“会有帮助的。请原谅，我需要跟司机谈谈……”

他从哈利身边走过，消失在过道里。

“你真的没事吗，哈利？”赫敏担忧地望着哈利说。

“我不明白……刚才是怎么回事？”哈利擦去脸上更多的冷汗，说道。

“嗯……那个家伙……那个摄魂怪……J站在那儿左右张望，我是说它似乎在左右张望，我看不见它的脸……然后你……你——”

“我还以为你发病了呢。”罗恩说，他看上去惊魂未定，“你好像变得僵硬了，从座位上摔了下去，开始抽搐——”

“然后卢平教授从你身上跨了过去，走到摄魂怪面前，掏出他的魔杖。”赫敏说，“他说 ：‘我们谁也没有把小天狼星布莱克藏在袍子底下。快走。’可是摄魂怪没有动弹，卢平低声说了句什么，魔杖里J冒出一道银色的东西朝摄魂怪射去，摄魂怪转过身，飘飘悠悠地走了……”
