　　There are two maiways iwhich foreigentities cainvest funds ithe Australiaeconomy： （1） portfolio investment， that is， the purchase of Australiasecurities （such as stock or bonds） or equity and debt transactions which do not provide the investor with any control over the operatioof the enterprise.Examples of such investment include the purchase of property， shares iAustraliapanies or government bonds by foreigsuperannuatioor pensiofunds.（2） Foreigdirect investment （FDI） ， that is， wheaentity， from outside Australia， establishes a new business or acquires at least 10 percent or more of aexisting Australiaenterprise.Wheacquiring at least 10 percent or more of aexisting Australiaenterprise， the entity acquires some control over the operations of the enterprise.Examples of FDI include the establishment of Australiabranches of multinational panies or joint ventures betweeAustraliaand foreigpanies.
